A few months ago, I reached a low point in my career. Every day was a struggle to get up and head into the office.
About that time, I started reaching out to both my professional and personal networks. I had been entrenched in work mode for so long, focused on keeping up the daily work / life routine, that I lost touch with friends, family and former colleagues.
On that journey of re-connection, I spoke with an old friend who for many years, has been dedicated to morning reflection. I recall her telling me what a powerful impact it’s had on her life and the special way she starts each day. I also had a conversation with a new friend who devotes time to reflection each morning – she was kind enough to lend me a Daily Devotional book.
That is an inflection point that changed my life! Taking 5 or 10 minutes every morning to focus on being grounded and being grateful before diving into email, rushing to meetings or appointments, allowed me to feel more closely connected to myself and to God. To this day, I am forever grateful to Holly and Laura for their insights and resources.
Your reflection time can be what you choose to make it. Whether you use that time to connect to your faith or you prefer to focus on messages of positive empowerment through quotes and essays, the power of morning reflection can be a life changing practice!
In 2018, I’m looking forward to introducing an additional practice of reflection into my growth process. As a John Maxwell Certified Speaker, Coach and Trainer, I’ve studied The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, guiding principles designed to help each person maximize their growth potential. (There’s a book available here.) In the Law of Reflection, John explains how learning to pause allows growth to catch up with you.
It can be all too easy to get caught up in the rigors of hectic schedule, bouncing from one commitment to the next. This Harvard Business Review article describes the brain science behind reactive thinking vs. reflective thinking. How often do we take time to reflect on our successes and failures, to be intentional in our thinking, ask tough questions and identify where we need to grow? I look forward to building weekly reflection into my schedule this year, and I hope you will join me!
